Involve Me and I Learn

Today’s students are digital natives and are inspired by multi-media content, which is driving change in the way that teaching is delivered in the classroom and how students are learning and retaining information.
With the right technology and equipment, students and teachers can now create visually sophisticated multi-media presentations to a professional standard, on a budget. The easy to use technology designed specifically for schools and the education sector allows for high quality video production, simultaneous recording, publishing to social media channels and live streaming from anywhere with an Internet connection to name just some of the functionality.
There are huge benefits to engaging students in the creation of multi-media content – it can be a classroom project, involving each and every student from planning to production; it’s a creative medium and it’s a great way of telling a story, as well as ensuring new information is retained and understood.
Benjamin Franklin once said: “Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.”  Multi-media generation is an exciting and creative way for students to learn new skills and new information – and the equipment doesn’t have to be bulky or complicated. Students can create and publish great video content in minutes, stream it live, and transform presentations and educational materials into captivating network-style TV programmes, simply and effectively.
Speaking, writing, reading, listening and maths skills are all utilized. Real-life skills are also developed including planning and organisation, time management, cooperative learning, communication, technology skills, problem solving, information gathering, and leadership and teamwork.
It’s also a fun activity that can be used in several situations: sharing news, streaming sports, theatre, school plays, awards and graduation ceremonies and other events, engaging with the community and the local business world, having guest speakers call in from their webcams, and recording lessons to be watched on-demand.
In today's digital world, integrating live production into your school's curriculum is a must. Educators can add deep, multi-layered elements to traditional learning. And students learn valuable technological and multi-disciplinary skills.

Talkshow VS4000

Also announced was their latest TalkShow iteration - the VS-4000, which allows you to connect up to 4 remote Skype calls, combine them all at once or in a live sequence to produce a professional real-time live conversation.  This is compared to only 1 input on the original TalkShow VS-100.  The TalkShow VS 4000 boasts impressive independent controls allowing colour correction of the Skype users video as talk back off air, optional picture in picture views plus most importantly minimal latency allowing your guests to have a flowing conversation that is able to be easily understood by the audience.

Version 2 of NDI, was big news at IBC, with many enhancements on the original.  Available in Q4 2016, NDI v.2 is compatible with all modern operating systems (Windows®, Linux®, macOS™) and mobile devices, the latter making NDI the first software IP video production standard to fully embrace the mobile industry.  NDI uses about 1/15th of the bandwidth of other IP standards, allowing it to run on existing network infrastructure.  NDI version 2 will include a high-performance codec that is resolution independent and supports alpha channel and bit-depths up to 16 bits per pixel. NDI version 2 is generationally lossless meaning that loss only occurs in the first generation of video and all subsequent re-compression steps are lossless. On an Intel® i7 CPU, NDI version 2 delivers the highest quality and best performance in any IP standard and will encode 1080p at 2200 frames per second (fps), 4k at 780fps, and 8k at 210fps. It will also include 16 or more channels of floating point audio at any sample rate, bi-directional communication with up-stream and down-stream meta-data support, and support for mobile devices in addition to shipping an SDK for iOS. NDI version 2 will also have cross subnet support to address large installation routing and security concerns, integrated fail-over support, and network-based video routing support.  Plus, all NDI developers can now have their software applications and tools available for download in the NDI IP Production Software store so users can easily locate the growing number of NDI-enabled products in one central location.

SNS 4 Bay EVO Prodigy Desktop

EVO is a RAID-protected NAS + SAN shared media storage server. It’s incredibly fast, easily expandable, and its flexibility is unmatched. The EVO workflow-defined digital media storage server includes powerful, in-the-box support for features like project sharing, bin sharing, and easy-to-use asset management.

Educational facilities offering an audio and/or video production curriculum face challenges well beyond those of typical editing facilities. For instance, compatibility is very important to educational facilities. The latest operating systems, and applications, need to be supported along with legacy products to give students a broad experience. Equipment bought during different budget cycles MUST talk to the SAN. This allows students to access their files from a variety of different platforms and tools.

Every new EVO includes ShareBrowser — a new asset management and search app that ties all your storage and project/media management into a single comprehensive window. Even though budgets are always tight, the demand of many students accessing the shared storage requires the right balance between price and performance. By leveraging existing network resources, SNS offers SAN solutions that provide the necessary performance while keeping costs reasonable. In many cases, our products eliminate the need for other components in an edit suite, such as expansion chassis for workstations.

The Timecode Systems Pulse: Now Shipping!

Timecode Systems Limited, a pioneer in wireless technologies for sharing timecode and metadata, today announced that its flagship product, the :pulse, is now available to buy through the company’s international network of resellers. Powered by the company’s robust BLINK RF protocol, the :pulse is Timecode Systems’ most sophisticated workflow solution yet, offering wireless sync and remote device control capability in one compact product.
Used in its simplest form, the :pulse is a highly accurate timecode, genlock, and word clock generator with an integrated RF transceiver to ensure rock-solid synchronisation with zero drift between timecode sources. As well as being a hub for timecode and metadata exchange, it’s also a powerful centre for wirelessly controlling devices on multicamera shoots. With a :pulse set as the timecode master unit, users can activate the device’s integral Wi-Fi or add a wired connection to the Ethernet port to open the free, multiplatform BLINK Hub app on their smartphones, tablets, or laptops. Enabled by the BLINK RF protocol, the BLINK Hub app allows users to not only centrally monitor and control all Timecode Systems timecode sources on set, but also any compatible camera and audio equipment to which they are connected.
“Our long-range BLINK RF was initially developed for the purpose of one-way communication of timecode and genlock, but we knew that we could make fuller use of the bandwidth,” said Paul Scurrell, CEO of Timecode Systems. “By integrating enhanced two-way multiplexed status, control, and metadata exchange capabilities into the :pulse, we opened up the possibility of using the BLINK Hub app for remote transport control of third-party cameras and sound equipment.”
Timecode Systems has already developed a bespoke remote device control solution for Sound Devices 6-Series mixer/recorders and is working on adding to the :pulse the capability to control GoPro®, ARRI, and RED cameras remotely via the BLINK Hub app.

“With the production of the SyncBac PRO, our embedded timecode sync accessory for GoPro cameras, now in full flow, we’re very close to launching remote control of HERO4 Silver and Black cameras,” Scurrell said. “Using either the :pulse’s Wi-Fi or a wired Ethernet connection into the :pulse, SyncBac PRO users will be able to connect their GoPro HERO4 Black and Silver cameras to the BLINK Hub app. This, among other things, unlocks the capability to put a GoPro to sleep remotely and then start recording again from the app when the action starts again. It’s a great way to save the camera’s battery life when it’s gear-mounted or rigged somewhere inaccessible.”
In a multicamera or virtual reality environment, having this level of central control of all of the timecode, camera, and audio devices on set considerably streamlines the production workflow. The Timecode Systems team will be showing how the :pulse, in combination with the BLINK Hub app, can deliver new synergies to busy crews at IBC2016.
